1. Education
A bachelor’s degree in marketing will go a long way toward helping you in your career.  Not only will a college degree help you get a job, but the knowledge and class experience will help you to impress employers and move up in your career.

2. Experience
Get as much experience in marketing as you can during your summer breaks and immediately after graduation.  Volunteering and interning at marketing firms will give you real world experience that will help set you apart from others.  Remember that the people you work for can give you good references if you do well.

3. Resume
Create a professional resume to attract interviewers.  Be sure to include all of your marketing experience.  Include a list of classes you have taken that pertain to marketing.  Also include any class projects or marketing plans.  And be sure to highlight any volunteer work and internships; mention the specific projects you worked on during these experiences.

4. Portfolio
Display all of your best work in a portfolio.  You may include class projects such as mock brochure printing projects or magazine ads.  If you have professional experience be sure to include examples of that work as well.  In your portfolio, emphasize the kind of work you want to do professionally.  If you want to be a copywriter, include more writing samples, or if you want to be in graphic design, include more examples of your designs.

5. Job Search
Networking is essential, both when you are looking for your first marketing position and when you are a seasoned professional.  Before you start job hunting, look up college alumni with positions in marketing firms to see if they can help you get interviews.  It is also a good idea to focus on smaller firms where you will be more likely to be hired.  At a smaller firm, you will also get to work more on projects, and this experience will help you move up in your career.  Networking throughout your career will help you acquire more clients and help you move to a bigger firm later on if you wish.
